Orthodontics
Understand Growth. Guide Development. Treat When Necessary.
Quin Dental is a general dental practice with significant experience in orthodontic treatment, allowing us to consider orthodontic needs alongside your overall dental health.
Our orthodontic approach is about more than simply making teeth straight.
We assess the relationship between the teeth, upper and lower jaws, facial growth and development, and the function of the mouth.
We provide orthodontic care for children, teenagers and adults, with particular experience in early orthodontic treatment and dento-facial growth and development.
Not every child requires treatment
Not every child with a developing orthodontic problem requires treatment.
Some problems may improve naturally as a child grows, while others may benefit from intervention at a particular stage.
Our role is to distinguish between these situations.
Where treatment is not necessary, we are happy to recommend observation and review at an appropriate interval.
Where treatment is indicated, we explain why treatment is recommended, the ideal timing, what we hope to achieve, and the available alternatives.
Looking beyond the teeth
In growing children, we consider factors that may influence dento-facial development, including:
Nasal breathing
Resting tongue posture
Oral muscle function
Lip posture and function
Development and width of the dental arches
Upper and lower jaw relationships
Facial balance and proportions
Crowding of teeth
Where appropriate, treatment is aimed at creating a more favourable environment for normal growth and development rather than simply moving teeth into position.
Creating space for developing teeth
By assessing jaw development, arch form, tooth position and oral function during growth, we can sometimes address developing crowding and lack of space at an earlier stage.
In our clinical experience, this approach can result in fewer permanent teeth needing to be removed during later comprehensive orthodontic treatment.
This does not mean that extractions are never appropriate. In some patients, removal of teeth is the most appropriate way to achieve a healthy, stable and balanced result.
Our aim is not to avoid extractions at all costs, but to avoid unnecessary extractions.
Our dental and orthodontic team
Our orthodontic care is supported by a registered orthodontic auxiliary, who works alongside the dental team in the delivery and monitoring of treatment.
This allows orthodontic treatment to be provided within the same practice as your general dental care, with your overall oral health continuing to be monitored throughout treatment.
The goal
Our goal is not simply straight teeth. We aim for a healthy, functional and stable bite, appropriate facial balance and a result that is suited to the individual patient.
